Others have said it before but this place is like none other we have stayed. The house itself is beautiful and the location is second to none. If you are looking for a tranquil getaway on the Caribbean coast then this place ticks all the boxes. The outlook form the terrace is uninterrupted views over the jungle and on to the ocean with frequent sightings of toucans and other birds. We had the pleasure of spending some time with Manuel and his daughter Sara. Both fantastic hosts and always on hand to help out or offer some advice on which beach to go to or where to eat. Their house is maybe a 100m away on the other side a small valley but we always had complete privacy at the house but had the comfort of knowing they were in shouting distance. We ate one night at El Refugio with Manuel (it is literally at the bottom of the drive) - food was excellent. Definitely put it on the itinerary. As advised by Manuel, be sure to rent a 4x4 to get to the house. It is up a couple of v steep and bumpy hills. I think anything less than a 4x4 might struggle. The location however only adds to the experience and the feeling of complete isolation and immersion in the jungle so don't let it put you off! The property was cleaned a couple of times during the week and the bedding changed as well with clean towels provided. The house keeper also did some laundry for us which was very kind of her. We drove from San Jose. Drive takes 5-6 hours (can be slow going through the cloud forest if you get behind a truck). Drive is pretty straight forward though once you are out of San Jose. Definitely be sure to do the drive during the daylight so set off early from San Jose. All in all a fantastic property, perfect hosts, superb location and a great vacation. Very sad to leave. - Mark, October 2016

A beautiful home that is completely immersed in the surrounding jungle. The best part is the sounds you hear as you go to sleep at night and as you wake up in the morning. We spotted wildlife such as Howler Monkeys, two kinds of toucans, a Green Macaw, a bunch of other colorful birds, red frogs, green and black frogs, hummingbirds and butterflies! A parade of leaf cutter ants decorated the outside driveway- fun to see the endless line of cut leaves go by. The surrounding area is full of a diversity of beautiful and flowering tropical plants, which appeared to encourage better wildlife sightings. We enjoyed hammock hour right before bed, listening to rain forest noises. The house was very comfortable, with great air circulation due to its design, and had solid plumbing and electricity and great wi-fi. No issues there! We really enjoyed the outdoor bathroom, which had a great shower. Comfortable bed. The entire house was immaculately clean as well, despite being in the rain forest. The house and surrounding area felt very safe. Our host was welcoming and offered great tips for dining and seeing the surrounding area. This is a great place to stay if you are open to being right in the rain forest, with all of its creatures, but want a reliable and comfortable setting to relax in. Also - check out the Refugio Grill, which is next door, for a beautiful dinner. We would recommend bringing a car - although it seems like you could manage without one. - Veronika, October 2016

Villa Toucan is an incredible experience! The whole setting and location is stunning and also a bit overwhelming at first. We enjoyed every minute in the house. Everything you need was there and whenever you needed to ask something or someone we were always able to contact Manuel or his housekeeper Blanca. She was amazing and kept the house nice and clean, she also took care of our laundry which was great. If you want to experience the jungle in Costa Rica and also have an ocean view every morning, you have to go to Villa Toucan. You will not regret it. - Sandra, October 2016

What an amazing place! This is an absolutely breathtaking villa, right in the middle of the jungle. Manuel was great - providing us with tips and advice before our trip, and even though he was not physically on the property during our stay, he was always available via AirBnB or text. The house was clean and stocked with all the towels and kitchen equipment we needed for our stay; it even included beach towels, ice, and candles. The beds were incredibly comfortable, and there's nothing quite like showering outdoors, while watching hummingbirds drink water from exotic plants. The house was easy enough to find, although I definitely recommend a 4x4 vehicle, as there are a few steep inclines on the property. Overall I would definitely recommend the Villa Toucan for anyone that's up for a beautiful adventure in Punta Uva. You will definitely encounter wildlife (birds and monkeys), a few very friendly cats, and lots on insects, so just be prepared. - Cassan, September 2016

Truly a jungle bungalow. We seen a sloth, heard the monkeys, seen frogs and insects we never seen before. The sounds are amazing, especially adding the rain. It took us a night to adapt to the open concept, truly is liberating to shower in the open with the jungle as your backdrop! I would recommend you have a vehicle, we didn't and hiked up/down to main road, could be tiring if you just want to relax. Host had pets, dog and cats that hung around, the kids loved that. The beaches nearby are beautiful. We enjoyed our stay, truly an experience for our family, the grounds are beautiful. If you want a real Costa Rica jungle experience it is here, away from the tourists and resorts. - Summer, August 2016

This was such an amazing place, even better than pictures or words can describe. In the jungle and very peaceful. Close to a nice town Puerto Viejo. Host was amazing, checking in on us often to make sure everything was good and was very flexible on time of arrival. He also gave clear directions making it very easy for us to get here. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay here, we recommend to every and any one. - Gabriella, August 2016
